Call for Papers

36th Applied Imagery Pattern Recognition Workshop (AIPR 2007) Call for Papers

Designing to See vs. Learning to See:
Comparing Analytical and Adaptive Methods

Cosmos Club, Washington D C
October 10-12, 2007

Many research and development efforts within the imagery pattern
recognition field have focused either on technical approaches that
require an a priori detailed analysis of the underlying imagery
mechanisms (“design”), or on techniques that dynamically modify
their operation in response to some established performance measures
(“learning”). The AIPR 2007 Workshop will examine the strengths
and weaknesses of these approaches and their potential to lead to new,
successful applications. The program will include paper
presentations, poster and demonstration sessions, panel discussions,
and a moderated debate on a key but contentious technical issue.

The workshop is organized around four primary themes: Advances in
Methods, Comparative Studies, Combining Adaptation and Analysis, and
Application Domains. Each primary theme will be focused on research
which examines the theoretical limitations, observed performance, and
future potential of these approaches.

Advances in Methods

Papers are sought on algorithms, software, and hardware that advance
the current state-of-the-art in analytical and/or adaptive methods for
imagery pattern recognition. Theoretical papers should also include a
discussion of empirical results for real-world applications.

Comparative Studies

Papers are sought which quantitatively compare state-of-the-art
analytical and adaptive methods. Papers should not be restricted to a
simple comparison of error rates, but should instead report multiple
aspects of the techniques’ performance (e.g, speed, reliability,
etc.).

Combining Adaptation and Analysis

Papers are sought which seek to use both analytical and learning
techniques to achieve superior performance to that which can be
obtained by either approach alone. Such papers should report
empirical comparisons of combined performance to the observed
performance of other methods using real-world data.

Application Domains

This session will examine the suitability of analytical or adaptive
methods for a variety of application domains, such as medical imaging
and remote sensing. Papers describing innovative application areas
are especially welcome.

Abstract submission deadline is 15 July 2007.
Plain-text email, to programchair@aipr-workshop.org, is the preferred
method for submission of abstracts.

We invite your participation in the conference as a speaker or as an
attendee. AIPR Home Page: http://www.aipr-workshop.org/.

Written papers will be required for accepted works and will be
published in the AIPR Proceedings.

The purpose of the Applied Imagery Pattern Recognition (AIPR) annual
Workshops is to bring together researchers from government, industry,
and academia in an elegant setting conducive to technical interchange
across a broad range of disciplines.

AIPR 2007 is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical
Committee on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and by the AIPR
Executive Committee: Dedicated to facilitating the interchange between
government, industry, and academia.
